Sewell Conservation Area
Sewell Conservation Area, 200.82 acres in size, is in southeast Boone County, south of Garden Prairie near the banks of the Coon Creek. This site is an agricultural conversion that, when completed, will be an expansive sedge meadow and grassland. A storm water management system controls water coming off the agricultural field allowing it to penetrate back into the ground.
Once established, the BCCD expects this site to be an outstanding habitat for many birds, including declining species of grassland birds. Grassland birds rely on expansive areas of undisturbed grasses that have been decreasing in number and size since European settlement began.
